As the rumble of motorcycles leaves, the clean up begins in Sturgis

Posted:

As the rumble of thousands of motorcycle engines begins to head out of town a new kind of rumble hits the streets of Sturgis.

It's the rumble of city workers and sanitation trucks in the effort to transform Sturgis back to its small town charm.

J. R. Johnson, the Superintendent of City Sanitation says they typically get busy before the rally even begins. That's due to the arrival of vendors unpacking all their goods to be sold along with restaurants and bars stocking up for the thousands of bikers.

"Once it gets here you know then its all just pretty steady the heavy spots are the bars, but now its all over town, everybody that's leaving the campgrounds, and everybody's packing up and throwing everything extra away," says Johnson.

Johnson also says this year they are pushing to recycle. So far, they have recycled more than 24 tons of cardboard.
