State of the 2012 Sturgis Rally

Posted:

Sturgis community leaders and motorcycle industry experts met this afternoon to discuss the current state of the rally.

Through the rally's first four days, numbers are high and the overall experience has been well received by visitors and locals.

Among the various topics discussed were traffic issues pertaining to four way stops, future infrastructure improvements, and visitors arriving before the rally's start.

"Considering a community of 6700 people becomes a community of tens of thousands and on some days maybe close to 100,000 in a day. And we host that time and again and it's just astounding, it's astronomical because there are very few cities that can ever try to accomplish that," said Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie.

"If we continue to extend beyond the rally earlier than the rally, very frankly I think that would kill the rally. I think what you have is a target and you have a bullseye, everybody comes because of the bullseye. Those few people, we might see more people coming earlier, but that's a trickle," said Legendary Buffalo Chip CEO Rod Woodruff.

Official attendance numbers will not be known until the weeks following the rally.
