Artists narrowed to 5 to sculpt Main Street Square art

Posted:

Destination Rapid City has invited five highly recognized artists to submit concepts for the Main Street Square artwork. That review process took the selection committee eight months. During that time members narrowed down 88 applicants to 31 to five.

The selection committee was formed by the Rapid City Arts Council at the request of Destination Rapid City. The five artists invited as finalists include:

  • Andrew Dufford, Denver CO
  • Mikyoung Kim, Boston, MA
  • Dale Lamphere, Sturgis, SD
  • Masayuki Nagase, Berkeley, CA
  • Yoshikawa Wright, Los Angeles, CA

The public will have a chance to meet the artists during a reception in Main Street Square on Aug. 22, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

The five finalists will tour the area in August then return on Oct. 31 to make their final presentations. Destination Rapid City hopes to have an artist under contract by Jan. 1, 2013, with work starting as soon as weather permits. This project is 100 percent funded by Destination Rapid City through private donations.
