Tuesday at the Pennington County Commissioners Meeting Monika and Katria Hotz were recognized for their heroic efforts on July 19th.
The two sisters were on their way to Sheridan Lake when they saw a fire near a home. They called 911 and began to fight the fire with a garden hose, shovels, and anything else they could find.
South Dakota Department of Agriculture Division Chief Ray Bubb said the two women went above and beyond what normal citizens would do, and their actions kept the fire from spreading.
The sisters say it was a learning experience. "In my head I was just like if we can just keep it away from the trees and her house, and it's funny because the field was in between the trees and her house," said Monika Hotz.
"I guess we were just in the mode to do what we were supposed to and just stay on task and not freak out which it was interesting," said Katria Hotz with a giggle.
Neither of the girls have any fire fighting training, but Kartia says now she is considering it as a possible future career.
