South Dakota justice leaders are setting their sights on slowing the circulation of synthetic drugs.
US Attorney Brendan Johnson says South Dakota is one of the only states in the nation to actively prosecute synthetic drug cases.
A recent DEA operation in Sioux Falls cracked down on three stores suspected of selling the drugs, and one store in Deadwood is also facing legal action.
He also urges parents to talk to their kids about the drugs, so they're aware of some of the drugs irreversible consequences.
"It can cause strokes, it can cause heart attacks, delusions, psychotic behavior, sit down with your kids, sit down with your teenagers and let them know about synthetic, its illegal and it's against the law," Said Johnson.
recently passed legislation in South Dakota makes some chemicals used in synthetic drugs illegal, but changing compositions make new drugs difficult to legislate.
Johnson says those distributing drugs of similar chemical compositions or which produce the same affects on users can still be prosecuted.
