Governor Daugaard says not to worry about firefighting money

Posted:

Fighting fires can be expensive. By mid–July Wyoming had burned through nearly 75% of its $9 million emergency budget. But Governor Dennis Daugaard says South Dakotans don't need to worry about running out of money.

There's no arguing that this year the Midwest has had a busy fire season. Daugaard says South Dakota usually has about $4 million set aside for disasters and we'll probably use more that this year.

But he also says there is other money set aside just in case. "We have over $100 million in reserve funds just for emergencies such as fires and floods and other onetime unexpected events so we're in good shape financially," said Daugaard.

Daugaard says last year South Dakota spent $20 million on disasters. Most of which went to flood relief.
