Black Hills counties seek more control over fireworks

Posted:

With the hot dry weather this year, you may have noticed red flag warnings and extreme fire danger warnings going into effect at times.

Those warnings are not everyday though, they only go into effect when conditions are right. And that with the current laws for prohibiting fireworks only during certain conditions, are making things confusing for law enforcement.

County Commissioners hope to change that soon and give counties the jurisdiction to ban fireworks as they please.

"The Black Hills Association voted to forward a resolution onto the state convention to give us the same power as the municipalities have, that is to ban fireworks in your jurisdiction," said Ron Buskerud, Pennington County Commissioner.

Currently it's only legal to ban fireworks at a county level when we are in extreme fire danger conditions.
