National Day of the American Cowboy celebrates contributions

Posted:

Coinciding with the final Days of '76 rodeo performance, Congress designated Saturday as National Day of the American Cowboy.

The annual resolution, introduced this year by a group of legislators including South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson, recognizes the contributions of cowboys to the growth of the country.

The cowboy embodies American values, the resolution states.

It also encourages people across the country to take part in some kind of celebration, something one life-long cowboy finds meaningful.

"My mother was in the rodeo," said Dan Gilger, owner of D/J Saddlery in Belle Fourche, "and my dad ranched all of his life, and I carried on most of that tradition. So, yeah, I think it is [meaningful]."

In a press release, Sen. Johnson said not only did cowboys shape America, they're still not done shaping it.
