OGLALA, S.D. (AP) _ The president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe has declared a state of emergency after several homes were damaged or destroyed during a weekend storm.

President John Yellow Bird Steele is calling on the Bureau of Indian Affairs to provide financial assistance to the tribal government and tribal members affected by strong winds that tore through the Pine Ridge reservation community of Oglala early Sunday morning.

The tribe says four homes were destroyed and 14 mobile homes were damaged or knocked off their cinder blocks.

The federal Storm Prediction Center says there were two reports of winds reaching 60 miles per hour in Shannon County, which includes the Pine Ridge reservation, Sunday morning.
