South Dakota's Senators share differing views on tax plan vote

Posted:

Senators across the country pick which path they will follow when it comes to your taxes next year.

South Dakota's U.S. Senator John Thune says he supports the Republican tax plan, which will extend the current tax rates one year.

Thune says small business owners he talked with say they don't want taxes to increase, and want to know what they will pay next year.

Thune, among other Republicans, says the Democrats' plan will increase taxes on small businesses, which employ 25 percent of the workforce nationwide.

"There have been independent studies that have said if you raise taxes on small businesses starting next year, which is what the democrat plan would do, that you would cost the economy over 700,000 jobs and reduce wages for Americans by 2 percent," said Thune.

South Dakota's Democratic Senator Tim Johnson says he will support the Democrats' plan, which would extend expiring tax cuts next year for families making less than $250,000 a year.

That plan allows rates to rise for everyone else.

He says the wealthy need to pay their fair share, and the country cannot afford to give tax cuts to those who need it the least.
