South Dakota to receive $3.5 million for transit

U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD), Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee announced Tuesday that South Dakota will receive nine federal transportation grants. The total funding is more than $3.5 million.

 "This funding will make it possible for bus systems across South Dakota to make much-needed improvements to their vehicles and facilities," said Johnson.

The grants will be distributed as such:

  • City of Sioux Falls, Vehicle Replacements and Bus Wash Bay - $1,464,657: City of Sioux Falls will replace bus wash bays as well as buses in its fleet.
  • Arrow Transit - Lemmon Vehicle Replacements - $60,000: Arrow Transit will replace a bus.
  • Prairie Hills Transit/Spearfish Bus Equipment and Maintenance Lifts - $70,000: Prairie Hills Transit will purchase two lifts for its repair facility.
  • Prairie Hills Transit/Spearfish Vehicle Replacements - $240,000: Prairie Hills Transit will purchase new buses to replace buses in its fleet.
  • Yankton Transit Vehicle Replacements - $120,000: Yankton Transit will replace two buses.
  • ROCS Transit (Lake Andes) Vehicle Replacements - $152,000: ROCS Transit, a provider of rural transit services, will replace vehicles in the cities of Bonesteel and Gregory.

  • Brookings Area Transit Vehicle Replacements - $180,000: Brookings Area Transit will replace vehicles in its fleet.

  • Palace Transit – Mitchell Vehicle Replacements - $240,000: Palace Transit will replace buses in its fleet.
  • River Cities Transit – Pierre Vehicle Replacements - $1,040,000: River Cities Transit will replace cutaway buses and minivans.
