Drought severity doubles in a week

Posted:

If you thought drought conditions were bad before then you best buckle up. The latest release from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows its only getting worse.

Last week 19 % of South Dakota was experiencing severe drought conditions. This week, that number has more than doubled to 45%.

90% of the state is in some kind of drought, while all of South Dakota is abnormally dry.

Experts who deal with the drought's affects on agriculture say multiple factors over a period of time have contributed to current conditions.

"We've dealt a lot with higher temperatures, high winds, and decreased precipitation, that all compounded the effects of the drought," said Adele Harty, a Cow/Calf field expert who looks at drought impacts on agriculture.

SDSU climatologist's are calling for above average temperatures to continue for quite some time.
