Main Street Square fountains are more popular than expected

It's now been more than 9 months since Rapid City's newest landmark has opened, but with such high expectations, is it everything people were hoping for?

According to Executive Director Megan Karbowski the answer is yes and then some.

Karbowski says thousands of kids play in the fountains during the summer time, and the families of those kids eat, shot, and dine in downtown as well.

Some have even started calling it the downtown water park, and Main Street Square Directors say, that's fine by them.

"We have kids that will actually sit out in the middle of the pavers and just wait for them to turn on every morning. It's just been a great response we're just so happy with it. If we're being coined as the term downtown water park that's great because I think that's what we are becoming," said Karbowski.

"It's not just for little kids, I mean I've seen adults run in there and have fun and just do what they want and I think everyone enjoys it a lot," said Khanni Saengphachanh, here from Sioux Falls for the summer.

The fountains turn on at 9 in the morning and go until 11 at night when they become illuminated by colorful lights.
