Authorities say Rosebud fires lead to evacuations

Posted:

ROSEBUD, S.D. (AP) _ About 40 homes have been ordered to evacuate due to a series of wildfires on South Dakota's Rosebud Indian Reservation.

Rosebud Sioux President Rodney Bordeaux tells The Associated Press that lightning storms sparked as many as 18 fires and four of them are "out of control" Friday.

Tribal newspaper writer Alfred Walking Bull says the most threatening fires started about two miles south of Rosebud village. The worry is the blaze will reach a more populated area.

Bordeaux says the area has rough, dry terrain and getting water to fire trucks is difficult. It's unclear how big the fires are, but he estimates the blazes have far surpassed 100 acres.

Chief John Spotted Tail says the fires expanded to the reservation's timber reserve. Firefighters were arriving from surrounding areas Friday.
