Air conditioners in short supply in Rapid City, across region

If the extreme heat finally made you break down and buy an air conditioner, you might have waited too long.

Hardware stores we checked say they are running low on the units, and the ones they have are more likely to be smaller.

At one of the stores, Hardware Hank in Rapid City, manager Dan French says as of Friday morning, he is down to just two units.

He says he has the ability to order shipments twice a week, but due to very hot air across most of the country, warehouses are running low all over because stores everywhere need air conditioners.

French says he has not seen that much of an increase in the number of people coming in looking to buy air conditioners, but says he sees a spike like this every year when it gets hot. He says people have resorted to picking up anything to keep them cool – buying everything from fans, kid's pools, and ice cube makers.
