Section 8 wait list for housing re-opens in Pennington County

Posted:

For those in search of affordable public housing in Pennington County, the wait has been long and may not improve anytime soon.

The list for section 8 housing has been closed since March 1st because public housing directors say the wait times began to exceed two years due to increased demand.

The list recently re-opened this month and staff say there are still approximately two thousand families waiting for public and private housing assistance.

Executive Director Doug Wells says the rough economy, not necessarily decreased funding levels, as just one of the reasons they're seeing an increased demand for affordable housing.  "We hit a point where just no one was going off the program, our normal monthly turn over wasn't even there," said Wells.

Wells says in the past, up to 30 people left the program every month, now that figure is about 9 per month. Wait times for housing are still up to 18 months.
