Cactus Fire starts off I-90

Posted:

Around noon Thursday firefighters were called to the Cactus Fire, located at exit 127 on I–90. By about 5:00 this afternoon it had scorched more than 1,000 acres.

Helicopters and firefighters took to the fields on the Cactus Fire that started east of Wall. Fire Management Officer Brian Daunt estimates that at the peak of the blaze nearly 100 firefighters were on scene, but as other fires around the area ignited and the Cactus Fire settled down Resources headed to fight the next flame.

Daunt says threatening skies caused active fire behavior and could mean a busy night for firefighters. "Today in particular we saw on this fire very rapidly changing wind directions which created multiple heads on the fire and kind of gave us some problems initially," said Daunt.  "So these thunderstorms pose a challenge for us in the afternoons when it's this hot out."

The cause of the cactus fire is still under investigation.
