Lawsuit claims fuel companies lied, overcharged

Posted:

Pulling up to the pump is usually a drain on your wallet, but now a lawsuit is alleging consumers have also been lied to and cheated by fuel companies.

Harms Oil Company of Brookings, SD and M.G. Oil of Rapid City are accused of overcharging for their gasoline and lying about its quality.

A lawsuit filed by South Dakota representative Mitch Fargen of Flandreau and five other people claims the fuel companies sold 85-octane gasoline to customers while telling them the octane rating was 87.

Those filling up at the pump in KOTA territory are outraged by the allegations.

"I think they should be fined big time. You're running 85 and you think you're running 87, that could be a costly trip to the mechanic, and for nothing," said Claudia Murphy.

"With the way things are, everything is expensive, and its not fair to those who are trying to make ends meet," said Matt Mccalley.

The Vice President at Harms Oil says he disputes the lawsuits allegations. A spokesman for MG Oil did not return KOTA calls asking for a comment.
