Hydroponic gardening leads to cheaper food production

Posted:

Some call growing plants without dirt the future of farming.

Hydroponic gardening, like the method used at Black Hills Harvest, delivers water and nutrients directly to the roots of a plant via tubes.

This allows the plants to take the nutrients when they need it, leading to better-tasting vegetables.  The result: they claim their plants grow 10 times faster and produce up to 30 times as many crops.

But the biggest advantage: operating year-round and in a controlled climate, these farmers never have to deal with the weather.

"The drought actually doesn't affect us one bit. Number one, my water bill is maybe around 100 bucks a month. I don't rely on nature besides the lifecycle and such like that," said Pauli Roterdam, co-owner of Black Hills Harvest.

Black Hills Harvest retails to the public, as well as catering to restaurants.
