State of emergency on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation

Posted:

Pennington County isn't the only one asking for assistance due to severe drought conditions.

Record high temperatures and low rainfall also has the Oglala Sioux tribe concerned.

On Thursday Oglala Sioux Tribal President John Yellow Bird Steele declared a state of emergency on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He wants the federal government to provide fans and air conditioners to tribal members who need them as well as assistance with transportation and water access.

Steele also wants aid for the tribal government, and for ranchers and farmers who haven't been able to harvest a hay crop because of the drought.
