Dozer line completed around Custer State Park fire

UPDATE 4:55 PM

Officials say the Switch Back Draw Fire is now 70 percent contained. Mop-up operations have begun, and crews expect to have the fire fully contained Thursday.

All closures REMAIN IN EFFECT until further notice, due to safety concerns.

Crews have made good progress on the Switch Back Draw Fire, located in Custer State Park, according to the latest update from the Great Plains Fire Information office.

Crew have completed a dozer line around the Switch Back Draw Fire, now estimated at 40-acre fire.  They will begin burnout operations between the dozer line and the fire today.

The lightning-caused fire is about two miles east of Mt. Coolidge lookout in Custer State Park.

Custer State Park Superintendent Matt Snyder has made the following closures:

  • The French Creek Natural Area is closed.
  • The Centennial Trail from Highway 16A to the French Creek Horse Camp
  • The Fisherman Flats access to the French Creek Natural Area
  • The Badger Clark Memorial is closed
  • Legion Lake, including the surrounding trail and beach area are closed; however, the Legion Lake Resort is open.
