Belle Fourche man drowned at Orman Dam

A Belle Fourche man drowned Monday night at Gadens Point on the Belle Fourche Reservoir.

Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere said Duane Flynn of Belle Fourche couldn't be revived after he was recovered from the west side of Orman Dam around 6:30 p.m.

Lamphere said the combination of high winds, large waves and a steep drop off due to a rapidly changing shoreline put the 50-year-old in immediate danger.

"They are using this for irrigation purposes and there's a lot of water going out, so everyday the shoreline is going to continue to change. You can be in three to four feet of water and in two steps be in twelve feet of water," Lamphere said.

The family of Duane Flynn said he has no insurance. The have established memorial accounts at Great Western Bank and Wells Fargo.  Donations will be accepted at any branch.
