120th tusk discovered at Mammoth Site

Posted:

Volunteer hours at the Mammoth Site have paid off for a Hot Springs woman.

Ruth Clemmer, an Earthwatch volunteer discovered the 120th tusk to be discovered at the Mammoth Site.  She uncovered it near the eastern end of the sinkhole on July 14. Ruth decided to stay and excavate instead of taking a field trip with other Earthwatch volunteers.

The left tusk of "Clem" was discovered in 2003, but he wasn't given a name until Ruth uncovered "Clem's" skull in 2009 and was then named after her. She has been hoping to find his right tusk since then.

To date, 60 mammoths (57 Columbian and 3 woolly) have been discovered as well as 85 other species of animals, plants, and several unidentified insects.
