Thunderstorms rumble across Black Hills, several fires reported overnight

Three fires continue to require resources Tuesday evening.

  • The Switch Back Draw fire burning in Custer State Park is estimated at 50 acres. It's not threatening campgrounds at this time, but 11 engines, 2 dozers, 2 helicopters, 1 SEAT, 1 water tender and a handcrew are fighting the fire, located 2 miles east of the Mt. Coolidge lookout.
  • The Stage Hill fire near the west end of Angostura Reservoir was 100 percent at 37 acres Tuesday.
  • The River Bend fire southeast of Edgemont is 75 acres and is expected to be contained tonight.

The Stage Hill Fire, located 13 miles east of Edgemont, near the west end of Angostura Reservoir is estimated at 25 acres.  Containment is unknown, as is the cause.

The River Bend Fire is burning 6 miles southeast of Edgemont.  It has grown to between 75 and 80 acres.  The cause is listed as unknown.   Containment is at 70 percent as of 6:30 am Tuesday.

6 other fires have been reported, all burned under an acre.

Containment: 100 percent

Dry Creek Fire
Location: 7 miles northeast of Hot Springs, SD, along Highway 79
Size: 0.33 acres on private land
Cause: lightning
Containment: 100 percent

Edgewood Fire
Location: 9 miles northwest of Rapid City, SD
Size: 0.1 acre
Cause: lightning
Containment: 100 percent

Quinn Fire
Location: 3 miles northeast of Pactola Reservoir
Size: 0.5 acres on private land
Cause: under investigation
Containment:  100 percent

Carr Fire
Location: 2 miles west of Elk Mountain Lookout
Size: 0.1 acre on Black Hills National Forest
Cause: lightning
Containment: 100 percent

Triple R Fire
Location: 2 miles south of Keystone and 2 miles east of Mount Rushmore
Size: 0.1 acre on private land
Cause: lightning
Containment: 100 percent
