Accused killer pleads not guilty to 6 counts

The state's attorney is still pondering whether to seek the death penalty against Michael Young. Young is accused of fatally stabbing his pregnant girlfriend in the Rapid City Walmart parking lot in April.

Monday morning, he entered a not guilty plea in Seventh Circuit Court.  Young faces first degree murder, fetal homicide, felony violation of a protection order, and stalking charges in connection with the death of 30 year old Morgan Meyers.

First degree murder and fetal homicide charges are punishable by the death penalty.

Deputy states attorney Scott Roetzel says his office is thoroughly researching the idea before deciding to pursue it. "There are aggravating factors that we have to establish in order to pursue the death penalty so right now we're researching that issue and applying it to the facts of our case and if it is something that is legally possible we definitely will pursue it," said Roetzel.

The state has until mid–August to decide whether to pursue the death penalty.
