Grass fires keep volunteer fire departments busy

Posted: Updated:

The Ketelson Loop fire is burning in a wheat field creating a lot of smoke.

Volunteer fire departments from across the local area are on the scene. This area of Meade County is remote - several miles northeast of Ellsworth AFB. The dry hot wind is pushing the fire to the northwest.  There is no estimate on the size of the fire.

Friday morning a grass fire burned 27 acres north of Rapid City.  Ranchers teamed up with volunteer firefighters to battle the fire on Tilford Road just west of Elk Vale Road.  Firefighters say someone working with hay sparked the fire.
