Changes coming to Rapid City Schools this fall

Posted:

The Rapid City School Board has approved scheduling changes, which will allow for early dismissal on Wednesdays.

Superintendent of schools, Doctor Tim Mitchell says the change will give teachers the extra time they need to work "one on one" with students as well as plan their curriculum.

The model has already proved successful in other areas of the country.

"We're very excited about building the shared knowledge of the community, the board, the administration, and teachers so that we can move this model forward and get the same kind of dramatic increase in student achievement that other districts across the country have," said Mitchell.

Mitchell says they have already had meetings with after school providers who want to expand their programs to help with early dismissal.

The Rapid City School Board also approved a 2.5% one-time bonus for teachers and certain district staffers.

The changes comes after continuing budget cuts, and in an attempt to keep wages competitive in the market.
