Hookah lounge continues fight for liquor license

Posted:

An embattled Rapid City hookah lounge continues its fight to have its liquor license renewed.

Last month Ifrits hookah lounge was denied a license renewal by the Rapid City council, based on allegations of underage drinking.

Stephen Wesolick, an attorney representing the owners of Ifrits says those allegations have been formally dismissed against co-owner Brian Winkle.

Ifrits has filed civil action asking the court to block the enforcement of the statewide smoking ban. Wesolick says a trial date could be set by early fall.

Ifrits has also filed a notice of appeal with the circuit court stemming from the denial of its liquor license last month.

"Its been our view that the city has unfairly targeted Ifrits hookah lounge, and try to shut them down. In fact, Mayor Kooiker, during the first city council hearing, made that intention on his part very clear," said Wesolick.

Wesolick says the lounge's revenue has declined since losing its license. But owners have put in a new kitchen and are now serving pizza
