Senator wants Secretary of State gone

Posted:

What started with allegations directed at former employee Pat Powers has led to an investigation of the Secretary of State's Office.

In June Senator Stan Adelstein of Rapid City made claims of impropriety, conflict of interest, and possible illegal activity in the secretary of state's office.

The claims were pointed toward the Director of Operations, Pat Powers who recently resigned.

Attorney General Marty Jackley is investigating but Adelstein says if Jackley doesn't turn up anything illegal he will continue to push the matter further. He says there are ethical concerns as well.

Adelstein hopes that Secretary of State Jason Gant will resign as an end result. "I want him gone because he's doing terrible damage to an office that has been held in such high non-political regard for many years," said Adelstein.

Jackley says he expects the investigation to be done in the next week or so.

"What our review is again limited to just those allegations that were brought to us by Senator Adelstein, in both his initial request as well as a follow up supplemental request. And those allegations we have narrowed it down to any potential criminal allegations that we're looking into like we would any other matter," said Jackley.

Gant denies all claims and says his office is a transparent one.
