Rapid City pine beetle program removes 1,222 infested trees

Posted:

The devastating pine beetle infestation has people in the Black Hills keeping a closer eye on their own property.

And it's paying off.

A Rapid City program to identify and remove infested trees is $155,000 deep already.

Surveyors have checked almost 5,000 acres -- more than 2,500 of which had beetles -- and identified 1,234 infested trees.

They've removed 1,222 of those, with an average reimbursement of $162 each.

On the land surveyed, experts found an average of one infested tree for every four acres they checked.
