SD legislative panel OKs boost in livestock fee

Posted:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ A legislative committee has approved a state board's plan to raise the fee for brand inspections designed to prevent the theft of cattle and horses in western South Dakota.

The 3-1 vote by the Rules Review Committee allows the state Brand Board to increase the current 80 cent inspection fee to 90 cents a head on Sept. 1. The extra revenue from the fee increase is expected to keep the brand inspection program afloat for another three years.

But the lawmakers also recommended that another legislative committee take a detailed look at the finances and statistical reporting by the Brand Board.

The Brand Board voted in March to increase the fee to $1, but cut it back to 90 cents after Gov. Dennis Daugaard urged the board to seek compromise.
