South Dakota SOS employee resigns

Posted: Updated:

The Secretary of State's Director of Operations, who was accused of impropriety by a state lawmaker, has resigned.

According to Secretary of State Jason Gant, Pat Powers resigned to spend more time with his children and to pursue private business opportunities.

In mid-June, District 32 Senator Stan Adelstein (R) accused Powers of impropriety, conflict of interest, and possible illegal activity. Adelstein asked Attorney General Marty Jackley to investigate. Adelstein says Powers is just one of the tools that was misused in the Secretary of State's office, and he says he hopes the next person to go will be Gant.

Gant denied all the claims earlier, saying that there was nothing illegal going on in his office, but he has not commented since the resignation.
