Parker Peak fire challenges firefighters

Posted:

Yet another fire burns through kota territory, this one just miles away from the White Draw Fire.

The Parker Peak fire, located west of Hot Springs near the intersection of highway 18 and old highway 18 is estimated at 800 acres - and is just 10% contained.

Seventy fire fighters are on scene working to strengthen their fire lines Tuesday.

But with weather conditions working against them, fire officers say it will be a long day for those on the front lines.

"Between the light flashing fuels, steep rugged terrain along with the winds we're expecting today along with the really low humidity, that could cause some problems for the guys out there trying to hold the line and improve it.  That's why they've been out there fairly early this
morning," said Pat Cross, Fire Information Officer.

For the first time in history, on the Black Hills National Forest South Dakota side, smoke jumpers jumped in to fight the Parker Peak fire. The fire was first sparked Monday, by lightning.
