Fire crews make progress on Black Hills fires

Thursday Evening update:

Crews continue mop up operations on the Crow Peak fire near Spearfish, according to a news release from Great Plains Fire Information. 

According to an update Thursday evening, the fire is 80% contained and has burned an estimated 135 acres.

Brian Daunt, Incident Commander, said at Thursday morning's briefing, "We have turned the corner on a difficult assignment and I appreciate the great team work that all the fire fighters have put in."

He also mentioned that crews will be released they can be reassigned to other fires.  Some of the crews from the Crow Peak fire will now be available to help on the Dakota Fire near Sheridan Lake.

The Dakota fire near Sheridan Lake is estimated at 328 acres and is 60% contained.  

Additional smoke and flames will be seen Thursday as crews actively start burn out operations.  Heavy smoke and flames will be seen on Highways 385 and 228.

"We had a very successful burn out operation [Wednesday] evening," said Julie Molzahn, Fire Information Officer.

Sheridan Lake Road remains closed from the intersection of Highway 385 to Spring Creek Picnic Area.   Highway 385 remains open.   

The Flume Trail and Centennial Trail between Upper Spring Creek Trailhead and Calumet Point remain closed.

The order temporarily prohibiting boating on Sheridan Lake and closing the boat launches remains in effect.

No evacuation orders are in effect.
