Monday accidents send several to the hospital

Several accidents sent several people to the hospital Monday.

The first happened around 12:30 p.m. on Highway 385, South of Deadwood. An SIV driven by 22-year-old Katlyn Utzman of Rapid City struck a motorcycle driven by 31-year-old Daniel Mills of Bemidji, Minnesota.

Utzman suffered minor injuries. Mills was transported by lifeflight to Rapid City Regional Hospital with life threatening injuries. He is listed in critical condition.

At approximately 1:40 p.m., a motorcycle rider, traveling West on Interstate 90 near Rapid City, struck a deer.

63-year-old Robert Neilson of Akron, Ohio was taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. Neilson is listed in critical condition. Traffic was backed up for a while as crews cleared the scene.

A Montana man was extricated from his jeep after an accident at Sturgis around 8:30 p.m.

South Dakota Highway Patrol Lt. David Berkely said 35-year-old Jeremy Swanson of Billings was traveling East on Interstate 90 when he crossed the median and both west bound lanes before crashing into cement blocks at exit 30.

The jeep caught on fire, And Swanson was trapped. He was eventually extricated and taken by lifeflight helicopter to Rapid City Regional Hospital with burns to his arm and legs.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
