South Dakota Students "GEAR UP" with a career fair

Posted:

GEARUP celebrates its 20th anniversary with a career and college fair.  250 students from nine different Indian reservations in South Dakota helped celebrate by asking questions and making plans for the future.

GEARUP is a program that helps get students from ages 14 to 17 ready for college and thinking about careers. The federally-funded program operates year round, but this is the first career fair by the program.

Spokesperson Darla Drew Lerdal says the fair gives students a unique opportunity to talk to people in careers they're interested in.  "So they can ask things like what do I need to get into your field, do you like what you do, what is it that you do? You know so just little things like that, that wouldn't necessarily come up in a classroom. So that what this is going to accomplish today," said Lerdal.

According to Lerdal, 100% of students that stay in the GEARUP program for four years graduate high school and 87% go to college. She says that 62% of those that go to college will graduate.
