Mayor Sam Kooiker has appointed Lon Van Deusen as the Interim Director for the Department of Parks & Recreation.  Van Deusen has worked for the City of Rapid City for 38 years.

Van Deusen was the Urban Forester for the city from 1975 through 1984 and has served the city as Parks Division Manager since 1985.

"Lon Van Deusen's has considerable experience and working knowledge of all Parks & Recreation Divisions and will be essential in making a smooth transition," Mayor Kookier said. "I'm confident the City will be well served by his skill and commitment."

Van Deusen will not be applying for the permanent Director position and will work closely with the mayor on the selection process.

On Tuesday, Mayor Kookier announced the dismissal of Jerry Cole.  Cole had been with the city for eight years.  Kookier did not give a reason for Cole's dismissal other than to say that he was no longer an effective leader.
