Continuing Coverage: "100 Days of Heat" update

We're 28 days into the "100 Days of Heat" campaign. Highway patrol officers have been busy, but they still have two big travel holidays ahead of them.

The numbers are in for "operation safe" which took place the Friday before Memorial Day. Statewide, 278 speeding tickets were issued, 544 warnings were given, 11 DUI arrests were made, and 100 seat belt violations were assessed by state troopers. There were three accidents with injuries but no fatalities.

The Department of Public Safety says that over half of all traffic fatalities in South Dakota happen in the summer, and Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day are the busiest days on the road.

Lieutenant David Berkley says 100 Days of Heat is meant to help keep people alive. "Zero would be a great number, zero fatalities in South Dakota on our road ways, and that's always our goal, but we can't do that with just us. We need the public's help also," said Berkley.

Berkley says during the holidays, local law enforcement also helps bring the heat in the campaign. Officers are especially keeping an eye out for speeding, drinking and driving, and seatbelt violations.

Labor Day weekend will be the end of the campaign, and if it's successful Berkley says they will do it again next year.
