Energy bills heat up with summer season

Posted:

During the summer months, it's not just your home that can heat up, it's your energy bill.  And, the first bill can bring some major sticker shock.

Mutch Usera of Black Hills Power says rates have held steady recently.  So, he says it's not the rate but the way consumers use energy that's the problem.

At this time of year, he says people leave indoor and outdoor lights on longer, and they run the air conditioner more.  The air conditioner accounts for about 20-30 percent of summer energy use, Usera said.

He says the keys to lowering your bill are conservation and maintenance.

"More than anything have your conditioner checked.  Another thing you can do is watch the temperature you set your air conditioner to.  Actually, if you can step the temperature up a couple degrees, you can actually save quite a bit on your energy costs," Usera said.
