Sheridan sees most May visitors since 2007

A KOTA Territory town is seeing its best start to the summer tourism season in half a decade.

Sheridan Travel and Tourism reports about 10,000 visitors came through the Tourism office in May. It's about 3,000 more than in recent years and the most the city's had since 2007.

Tourism director Penny Becker attributes the bump to the first signs of economic recovery and more modest gas prices than many were expecting.

But while the city is seeing more visitors, Becker's not sure it's all getting to the businesses that rely on them.

"When are people are cutting their spending," she said, "that is where they're doing it. For their souvenirs or whether it's the high-end meal that they might be cutting out, or camping versus staying in a motel."

She added Sheridan is also seeing a good June, with around 10,000 visitors already and two weeks to go.
