Mayor Sam Kooiker issued an announcement Tuesday morning that Jerry Cole has been dismissed from his position as Director of the City's Parks and Recreation Department.

The reasons were reported to the City Council as required by South Dakota Codified Law 9-14-13, according the release.

That statute says the Mayor has the power to remove from office any officer appointed by him "whenever he shall be of the opinion that the interests of the municipality demand such removal," but must report the reasons for the removal to council members.

The Mayor's reasons for dismissing Cole were not provided in the release.  Council members say they were informed of the reasons during an Executive Session Monday night but can't comment, citing confidentiality.

The Mayor's Office will be making an announcement about an interim directly shortly, according to the release.

Cole began work as the Parks and Recreation Director in March 2004.  He is the only person to have held the position.  He was responsible for Parks, Open Space, Aquatics, Recreation Programs and Facilities and the municipal golf courses.
