Fugitive caught in Black Hills will go back to Wyoming

Posted:

A fugitive who spent two days on the run from the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp before he was caught in the Black Hills will return to Wyoming to face charges.

In a Pennington County courtroom Monday morning, James Friesen waived the extradition process. The Casper native will be transferred to a correctional facility in Cheyenne within the next ten days.

Michael Murphy, warden of the honor camp at Newcastle says Friesen walked away during a welding session as other inmates were turning in their tools. Then he scaled a 12-foot fence in order to flee. "You'd be surprised how fast a young person can scamper up a twelve foot fence," Murphy said.

The Newcastle honor camp is designed for good behavior inmates. Warden Murphy says Friesen was a part of the boot camp portion. Depending on how well an inmate does during this nine to 12 month program, time is often taken off their sentence once it is complete.

Friesen was serving three to five years for forgery when he escaped Monday June 11th. He came to the honor camp in February, and Murphy says to his understanding Friesen didn't have much longer to finish the boot camp program.

He was caught by a sheriff's deputy in the Parmelee Canyon area of western Pennington County two days after his escape.
