Deadwood prepares for higher stakes

Posted:

Deadwood casinos want to play with the big boys and starting July 1st, they hope to pull up a seat to the table.

Thanks to legislation that passed earlier this year, bet limits will increase from $100 to one $1000 in participating Deadwood casinos, starting July 1st.

The increase in cash flow will require more security personnel and advanced surveillance in larger casinos like the Deadwood Mountain Grand to meet gaming commission regulations.

Many smaller casinos likely won't adopt the increase bet limit but Gaming Association president Tom Nelson says everyone will benefit in the bigger picture.

"They're bringing a new dynamic into town, a new customer base to town and with that the whole boat floats. Everyone will benefit," said Nelson.

"It looks good in marketing literature. All in all there aren't a lot of players who will lay $1000 on the table but it gives them the opportunity to win more even with a smaller bet," said Deadwood Mountain Grand manager Brad Hemma.

Casino managers say they are planning to capitalize on the anticipated new wave of players by hosting celebrity and charity tournaments poker tournaments later in the year.
