SD Democrats optimistic about fall election

Posted:

South Dakota Democrats expect to be outspent by Republicans in this year's election, but they believe they can make gains up and down the ticket by emphasizing issues.

Democratic Party Chairman Ben Nesselhuf says Democrats will target spending to get their message out.

Democrats believe they will be helped by two ballot measures that refer laws passed by the Republican-dominated Legislature to public votes. One sets aside money for grants to large construction projects. A plan to give bonuses to top teachers also is expected to be referred.

Democrats opposed both measures, saying money instead should go to boost state aid to schools.

Republican Party Chairman Tim Rave says the measures will attract new businesses and get more money to teachers.

Democrats hold their state convention in Aberdeen this weekend.
