Rapid City Regional Hospital shows off new surgery robot

Posted:

Complex surgical procedures will soon be made easier thanks to a little more high-tech, and virtual help.

Company representatives for the Da Vinci Robot demonstrated the device at Rapid City Regional Hospital Wednesday morning.

Here's how it works: specially trained surgeons sit at a remote location and control robotic arms while operating on a patient.

Da Vinci helps surgeons by providing exact measurements, as well as the ability to use a third arm.

The technology started in the military, where doctors could operate on solders in the field.

"Specifically, they look more at the urological surgeries, maybe prostate surgeries, gynecological surgeries, and heart surgeries through this robotic type surgery," said Angie Kliewer, Director of the Rapid City Regional Hospital Foundation.

Rapid City Regional Hospital is looking to purchase Da Vinci as soon as this fall.
