1,700-acre Skull Creek Fire near Newcastle is now 90% contained

A fire that has grown to 1,730 acres about 20 miles northwest of Newcastle, Wyo. is now 90 percent contained, Weston County Fire Warden Daniel Tysdal said Saturday.

Smoke was discovered in the area Tuesday morning.  Three separate fires sparked by lightning likely began late Monday or early Tuesday.  Those three fires merged, burning through rugged and rough terrain, Tysdal said.

Crews planned to finish improving the fire line and conduct mop up and patrol Saturday, Tysdal said.

As of Saturday, 72 people were working the fire from local, state, and national agencies, including national Type 1 and Type 2 hand crews.  Other resources were called in from South Dakota and other outside departments to help fight the fire.

Fire officers began demobilizing resources Friday night as they gained the upper-hand on the flames, Tysdal said.  Since then, they've released resources very quickly and plan to continue doing that into Monday.
