The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center has already started honoring the 40th anniversary of the Rapid City flood by setting up an exhibit in the halls.
A series of photos and information about the historic flood of 1972 lines a wall in the civic center.
General Manager Brian Maliske says that people don't necessarily forget about the flood, but it deserves to be remembered and that's where the exhibit comes in.
As a local boy that grew up in Spearfish, Maliske says he knows that he will never be able to forget the aftermath of that day.
"I still remember seeing in my mind the cars stacked up out Frontier Ford. I remember the people that we drove by asking for help asking for some money, and those things have stuck in my mind ever since and I will go to my grave remembering," said Maliske.
Saturday is the official anniversary of the flood and the civic center will have several events over the weekend to honor and remember those that were lost.
