Deadline to file for independents is closed

Posted:

While many winners have already been decided in the state's primary races, those results could change if any independent candidates met Tuesday's deadline.

Pennington County Auditor Julie Pearson says independent candidates had until 5 PM Tuesday to file their nominating petitions.

Independent candidates have to collect more than 300 signatures, whereas a Republican or Democratic candidate has to collect 50.

If an independent candidate makes the deadline, the race continues in November's general election.  "We would verify their petitions just like we do if you circulate for a party and then we would notify them whether they are a candidate or not. And then the candidate's name, the winner from tonight, and the independents name will show up on the November ballot," said Pearson.

Pearson says she knows of only one independent candidate trying to submit a petition for the state's attorney's race, but he failed to submit the required number of signatures before the deadline.
