Sanford Underground lab opens with VIP tour

Posted: Updated:

Governor Dennis Daugaard, dignitaries from around the nation and top ranking scientists toured the Sanford underground lab's Davis campus Wednesday.

Two experiments will be housed in the lab's 4,850 level: the world's most sensitive dark-matter detector and another that will search for a rare form of radioactive decay.

The experiments are the culmination of the work of hundreds of scientists from four different countries and 16 different universities.

Project leaders say the research will bring worldwide attention to South Dakota, and ultimately create jobs.

"The direct impact on South Dakota is that this is absolutely a top flight facility in the world. We're going to have the most sensitive world wide experiment in this sort of competitive field," said Lux Experiment co-founder Tom Shutt.

"[These experiments] allow our young students to be able to participate in cutting edge science and not leave South Dakota. But at the same time to meet scientists from all over the world coming in here," said Former South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds.

The 8,000-foot-deep lab is currently funded with a $15 million dollar budget from the Department of Energy.

Scientists estimate it may take up to two or three years to be able to detect 'dark matter'.
