High school graduates face uncertain job market in the future

Posted:

The class of 2012 is graduating in the uncertain aftermath of one of the worst economic slides since the depression.

Unemployment has topped 20% for high school graduates in all but four months since the start of 2009.

But, there are signs things are turning around.

And Saint Thomas More High School graduates are hoping for the best by the next time they don the cap and gown.

"We might have a better chance, the economy could turn or it could get worse, it sorta depends, I guess we'll have to wait and see," said Zach Glissendorf a future student of Augustana College.

"My parents as well as other parents, they're a little bit wary about if you can support yourself with how you'll get paid." said Brianna Arity, future student at SDSU.

A new survey shows unemployment for graduates 24 or younger averaged 7.2 % during the first third of this year. That's compared to 9.1% in the same period in 2011. Researchers estimate about 7% more new college grads will find work this year than a year ago.

Congratulations to all of the area's graduates this spring.
